What Planet?
In an attempt to recover from Sunday’s ride, I’ve not been riding the bike the past two days. What I have been trying to do, is get some sleep. Although, I still don’t find myself getting to bed much before 11pm. Tonight I will get back on the bike for the Wednesday night Need for Speed club ride. Should be fun, in that punishment is pleasure sort of way.
Yesterday evening, a very rare solar occurrence took place; the passage of the planet Venus between the Sun and the Earth. The next time this will happen will be 2117, so very rare indeed, unless you happen to be the universe, then it’s a rather regular thing which barely even measures on your personal time-line. But since none of us are universal, it was a pretty exciting thing to be alive for. Anyhow, where I am, it was to be visible between roughly 6:04-6:20pm. To safely view this spectacle, my friends Alison and Kt mailed special eclipse viewing glasses to myself and a number of friends around North America.
Friends in Toronto saw the passage of Venus, so too did friends in New Mexico and Texas. I, alas, did not. Though I was able to stare at the Sun with my special glasses, I was unable to see that little black dot cross before the Sun. Below are two pictures; one I took through my glasses, showing an absence of Venus, and one taken by my friend Peter, where Venus is clearly visible. The only logical explanations I can come up with are that either I was looking at the wrong sun or, Kt and Ali sent me Venus-proof glasses.
