Welcome to Denver, Welcome Back to Colorado

Last Wednesday, after visits with family and friends, the Sprinter van was packed and rolling towards Colorado. The migration had begun. With the exception of wasting about 90minutes driving through Chicago, during morning rush hour, in the rain, after I missed my exit for I80, it was an uneventful 1870 miles/3009 kilometres to Denver.  Meeting Reilly after work, we made for downtown. REI for new shoes, a pub with a great patio and dinner at a pizza joint, mountains on the horizon. Perfect. Saturday, we ride.

Leaving the vehicle in Nederland, west of Boulder, we rode north along the Peak to Peak Highway for about 16miles. Climbing, real climbing. In the mountains, real mountains. It felt great to be back here in Colorado. Long smooth roads with wide shoulders and many more cyclists with big smiles. At the top of a climb, we stopped to take in the view of Longs Peak, then turned around for the more of the same.

Sunday we completed a duathlon of sorts. In the morning we parked the vehicle in Golden and rode the Lookout Mountain Road loop. Another fun climb with several switch-backs near the summit and a tremendous view of Golden far below.  Yup, love me some Colorado climbing. And you know, the elevation wasn’t yet kicking my sea-level butt.

After the ride we played a round of disc golf. It was my first chance to use the three discs(driver, mid-range, putter) my friend Sara gave me from her collection of hundreds. My long range game is pretty terrible. I really need to learn how to better throw for distance. My mid-range game is descent while my putting kicks ass. Reilly won by three or four shots.

Monday was back to work for Reilly and Krista, so I got in the van and started driving towards Salida…
