Welcome Home Archie

Home, they say, is not a place but a feeling.  Here in this place, here in Terlingua, SW Texas, the feelings that fill my soul are those of peace, contentment and joy.  My people, my tribe, live here and we are a strong, supportive community of remarkable individuals.  Oh yes, and the mountain-biking is like none-other I’ve ever enjoyed.

Being one of the local riders here in the Big Bend, I sometimes get the chance to take visitors on their first ever ride in the Chihuahuan Desert.  What never happens, however, is the chance to take a local-boy out for his first ever ride in his own back yard.  Well, last week I had just that opportunity.

Archie is a river man, a boater extraordinaire, both on the Arkansas in Colorado and the Rio Grande in Big Bend.  A staple of this desert community for many years, I kinda figured he’d done it all.  Apparently not.

In Colorado, Archie lived and worked in Buena Vista, about 30miles north of Salida.  About mid-summer, I received messages from him asking for my input on a few bikes he was considering purchasing; Trek, Santa Cruz, Yeti, all excellent bikes.  Eventually he bought himself a Santa Cruz SuperLight R with a 1×10 drivetrain and all the bells and whistles.  It’s one heckofa bad-ass bike.

Though we never got to ride together in Colorado, on Wednesday, Reilly and I took Archie for his first ever ride in the Chihuahuan Desert.  Just a little two hour ride, we started by taking him down the nerve-racking Cake Walk before heading for several miles of locals-only trails.  To my surprise, it was all new to Archie, he’d never been on those trails, certainly not on a bike.  It was really something special to watch this Terlingua local boy gazing upon his back yard with the eyes of a child, taking in a world he’d never known…until now.  Welcome home, Archie.
