Welcome home
Waking Friday morning, I found a UPS store that would serve my administrative needs. Believing I knew where I was going–I had ridden right past it last night while searching for somewhere to stay–I packed my gear and set out for the day. Again, believing I knew where I was, I proceeded to go past the address. After a short while I turned around and retraced my tracks. “Ahh, that’s where I should have gone” I said to myself as I took a right. Well, I was done believing; now I knew I was wrong. In fact, that mistake caused me to scale yet another long undulating hill, descend the other side, confirm where I was, then climb back over that hill. Okay, so maybe I was having a good time.
Finally getting my chores done around 1pm, it was time for coffee. Sufficiently recaffienated I rolled by the local bike shop and picked up a cyclist-friendly road map for the Bay Area. I confirmed the route and was on my way. Waiting at red light, the unmistakable lines of a Cervelo RS pulled up next to me. “Hi.” “Hi there.” With that, a friendship was born.
Kelly was out for a ride and since she was heading towards home in San Francisco, she quickly offered to show me the way to downtown. That is, if you don’t mind a climb.” Not bothering to mention a morning spent getting lost and climbing, I replied that if she was keen to continue riding, I would gladly keep going.
Two miles and a 12-13%grade later, we arrived at the spot to photograph that great orange(not gold) steel monolith. From there, we spun back down that hill and onto the Bridge itself. Taking several minutes to cross, I gazed at the city unfolding ahead of me, mindful of the various landmarks Kelly had pointed out.
Once in San Francisco, we stopped and Kelly identified on my map where we were, where we were going and a few other areas of interest. As she was nearing home, she pointed out a coffee shop that might interest me. Agreeing to get in touch over the weekend, she continued on her way home. I, however, pulled up to Mojo Bicycle Cafe; a full service bike shop and coffee house. Oh yeah, now I was home.
Befriending the guys in shop–John, Andy and Chris–we chatted about my touring, John’s recent head-on crash with a Mercedes Benz and Sunday’s cyclocross race in Golden Gate Park. Eventually, it was time for me to find my billet for the night. As it turns out, there is camping in The Presidio, a forested area on the city’s north coast. With tent erected, sleeping bag unpacked and belly full, I was soon fast asleep.
