Last Sunday I had the very distinct pleasure of joining three steely mountain-bikers for three days riding in the Durango area. Sunday morning, Taf, Reilly, Kimberly and I packed four bikes, three dogs and all the gear we’d need into two vehicles for the 3.5 – 4 hour drive from Salida to Durango. By about 1:30pm we’d arrived and were turnin’ the pedals.

Entering the Horse Gulch Trails on Telegraph, the first of four climbs was immediately upon us. Up along Sidewinder and down Cowboy, we were hootin’ and hollerin’ the whole time! Anasazi Descent, Mike’s Loop, Rocky Road[was it ever!] and finally all the way down Raiders Ridge. The single-track was hard-packed, groomed and fast, though certainly with plenty of technical riding to keep things interesting. The climbs made you work, but not for too long. Signs at every junction were really clear and made it easy to navigate ourselves around, particularly as we had to keep an eye on the clouds all round us. Raiders Ridge was tremendous fun, right along the rocky edge of that ever-so precipitous ridge, affording us unobstructed views of Durango from above. The trail was technical but you could still keep your momentum and ride smoothly. The many rocks obstacles that one could choose to ride[and we usually did] kept us laughing the whole time, it was just so much fun.
Three and half hours of fun in Horse Gulch and the trip had just begun! Back at the van, we changed, cheers’d and watched a guy stumble and fall quite hilariously as he attempted to fish in the river. We and his family on shore all roared with laughter as he fumbled about in the water, laughing along with us.
Dinner was at
Fired Up Pizzeria and was really, really good..and plentiful! Zane, an old friend of Kimberly’s who made our delicious pies, would join us for camping the following evening. After chow we left town and found camp near Hermosa Creek in the San Juan National Forest. Knowing Monday would be a long day, we were all in bed early, anxious to ride a section the Colorado Trail.
