There’s a New Girl in Town
If you’re a regular bowlingbybike reader, then you know about my recent tryst with a certain little orange single-speed. It was a passionate romance, one which revealed a desire I never knew existed; to ride with just one gear. Kinky, perhaps; but heck, I’m a pretty open minded guy, I’m willing to experiment.
Ordered about a week ago, Friday, I got the message: “your bike is here.” Yup, Friday afternoon my very own 2013 Kona Unit single-speed 29’er had arrived.
Since Saturday was spent riding 11 hours in the State Park [the Epic loop but starting/finishing in the Ghost Town], assembling the new bike would have to wait till Sunday. After-all, while she may be new and exciting, my number one girl is still Isabelle and I was not about to break a date with her. This afternoon, therefore, I trundled down to Desert Sports to meet the latest two-wheeled arrow in my bicycle quiver.
As she emerged from her cardboard bassinet, her raw, natural beauty was evident. The cro-mo steel frame is unpainted, covered instead with a clear-coat to protect it from the elements. The orange decals stand-out on her barren tubes while the black components keep her looking stealthy. The rigid fork is matte black, but I’ll soon be swapping that out for a suspension fork. It’s really rocky here in the desert and I’m not gettin’ any younger.
Installing Slimed tubes and Isabelle’s handmedown XTR pedals, I made note of other various parts I’ll soon upgrade. They include a Moots titanium seat-post, a Fizik Arione saddle and a carbon handle-bar. To match the gold-coloured brazing on the cable-guides and brake-bridge, I’m thinking a gold anodized bottle-cage and gold Chris King headset would do nicely. The cranks and wheels will likely only get replaced as necessity dictates. I do also need to cut down those monstrously wide handlebars. Gearing is 32×18 with stopping power provided by a pair of Avid BB-7 mechanical disc-brakes
Now some of you may be surprised that I went with a factory stock, mass-produced, steel bike rather than some super-sexy custom-made titanium frame. But honestly, since this won’t be my primary bike and since I’m still a bit hesitant about this whole single-speed thing, I though it wise to get a bike I can learn with and build upon.
One thing I’m unsure of right now, however, is a name. As with nearly all my non-titanium bicycles, it will begin with the letter ‘S’ and will be revealed to me in due time. After all, I don’t know anything about this new girl; I’ve no idea about her personality or her proclivities. Guess I’ll just have to take her for a rip tomorrow to get properly acquainted.
