The Guts
Tuesday, Bevin and I arrived in Salida with time for a quick ride ’round S Mountain. Wednesday it rained, so there was no ride to be had. Thursday–after doing some work on the bikes at Absolute Cycles–Bevin, Reilly and I went out for another local Salida ride. This time, we rode out of town a mile or so before 55mins of climbing up Country Rd 49 and the Bears Creek Trail.
Yup, fifty-five minutes of slow climbing up an ever steeper dirt road. At times, with the altitude taking its toll, my heart rate was soaring. Once at the top, we enjoyed a bit of fun single-track. Then, all of a sudden, Reilly got off his bike, shouldered it, and began walking through the woods. Bevin and I looked at each-other, shrugged our shoulders and followed suit. After a few minutes we arrived at a local’s only trail.
“The Guts” is aptly named, as it took some serious nerve to tackle what was some of the most intense, technical and steep downhill single-track I’ve ever ridden. It was so exhilarating! After that hairy section we continued down hill joining the Little Rainbow trail before the final Race Track back to home.

Until it was surpased later in the trip – this was a personal best. Longest grind up a hill ever falled by some staggeringly awesome singletrack and killer technical downhill.
