Last week I had just that chance as Mike and Crystal made the trip from Terlingua, TX to Salida, CO. On Thursday, we three and Ali–also visiting from Ontario– would enjoy a beautiful four-hour ride.
After a few miles to get us out of town, the ride began in earnest; an hour long climb up Bear Creek road. At the half-way point, we chatted with a couple of guys doing trail-work for the Park Service. Giving them my name and telephone number, I’m hoping to do a bit of trail-work while here in CO; gotta give something back after all the riding I’ll do on these trails this summer. It was also at this point that the dirt road degenerated to a rough 4×4 jeep road; steeper, less maintained, looser and hard work; I love it! We all felt good–well, Ali was a bit red-faced–and continued on to the Rainbow Trail trail-head
This section of the Rainbow is six miles of well-maintained single-track, mostly bench-cut into the mountainside, offering spectacular views of the valley below and the mountains beyond. Eventually we hit route #108; a steep descent that really forces you to be alert, pay attention and ride fast! From there, onto Little Rainbow then the final down-hill section, a trail called Race Track that twists and turns as it hurtles you downhill. Big smiles all around as we finally leave the trail and get back on the road for the cool-down back into town.
Taking our time throughout the ride to take pictures, enjoy the scenery and each other’s company, it was a truly satisfying day on the bike. The best part of the day were the smiles on the faces of my friends as we rode together in Colorado. I love my life.
