Talkin’ Dirt at Pooley Bridge
Donning my new red and white cycling cap, I packed my gear and set off for a day of spectacular views, one heckuva big climb and the meeting of a fellow mountain-biker. Riding north and North-east along route #A592, I grunted my way to the top of the Kickstone Pass; honestly, it felt more like something else got kicked! Although it was the only real climb of the day, it was a big one that rewarded me with great views and a fast, twisty decent!
Passing through Patterdale, I was soon riding along the banks of Ullswater, a beautiful body of water surrounded by steep, wooded hills teaming with hikers, boaters and mountain-bikers. It got me to thinking how I missed my mountain bike and would like so very much to get in some off-road riding while in the UK.
One of those who’d made the trip to enjoy the local MTB trails was a guy named Stan. Arriving in Pooley Bridge, it seems we had both decided it was time for some refueling after several hours on the bike. As we devoured our meals, we soon got to chatting. Turns out he is new to the sport of mountain biking but clearly, he’s hooked. Despite his buddies all canceling for the day’s ride he still made the 50mile drive from home to enjoy a day on the trails. As often happens, the conversation of my touring came up. He asked where I planned to go next, offered a few suggestions and asked if I planned on visiting the Northumberland coast. “Absolutely” I replied. Giving me his name, telephone number and website address he told me that when I got to Newcastle I had a place to stay at his B&B. Thinking back to my earlier thoughts of mountain-biking, I mentioned that it’d be great it I could rent a mountain bike while I was there. “No need, I’ve got a spare bike you can use.”
Stan, I can hardly wait! See ya in August!
