Stressed? Sweat!
Earlier this week some personal things came up that kinda stressed me out. Without going into details, suffice it to say my mind was else-where while my body was tense. Once upon a time I would have made my way to the bar and two-fingers of single-malt. Today, however, I go straight for a fix on two-wheels, knowing that physical exercise is equally as good for the mind as it is the body. Sore legs beats a hang-over any day!
Tuesday I went for a brisk but not too-spirited two-hour ride. Perfect. Broke a bit of a sweat, got my heart-rate up and enjoyed the views.
Wednesday I had planned to do the 86 mile version of the Epic Loop. Early in the day things came up that had to be dealt with, so I just farted around with Sally the SS on this huge rock in front of my trailer, pretending I know how to ride trials. With things resolved, Isabelle and I went out for a good hard spin later that afternoon.
Thinking I’d ride just 3-3.5 hrs, I pushed it pretty hard for the first 90 minutes. Then I decided to add some extra mileage in the State Park. Forty-five minutes later I was at the turn-around point to get me home before the sun set. The final 15 miles from the Barton Warnock Centre to the Ghost Town is mostly a gradual up-hill with lots of steep ridges to traverse and arroyos to negotiate. Oh, and now I had a slight head-wind. Those 90 minutes were tough. I was starting to really lag, even feeling the tinge of cramping in my calves and left thigh. Not good. I took on all the water and electrolytes I could while staying smooth and steady. After four hours and fifty minutes, just ten before I’d be out of sun, I made it home.
Thoroughly exhausted, rather spaced out and certainly hungry, I quickly changed and rolled up to the Starlight Theatre for some chow. Though I knew I needed to eat, I could barely manage half of my veggie burger [with sautéed onions, Swiss cheese and a fried egg, thank you very much]. Drinking lots of water, I was soon in bed, dreaming of the massage I had scheduled the following afternoon.
While I may have pushed it a bit hard and certainly didn’t take on enough water, that ride really did the trick. A good, honest work-out with a bit of pain. Pushing hard, riding fast; attacking climbs, bombing descents; flying over jumps, pushing through corners. It was tremendous, just what I needed.
Really, it makes no difference whether you bike or run; play ice-hockey or do yoga. Your mind, lungs and heart are all connected; what’s good for one is good for all.
So do yourself a favour, if something’s got you down or stressed out, go sweat some! Your soul will thank you!
Oh ya, and a good massage is nice, too.
