Southport; Where BMX is Alive and Thriving

Leaving the good people of Gronant Saturday morning, I rode through Flint then Chester and along the extensive canals. Stopping just long enough to eat lunch in a park, I continued on to the Delamere Forest Park. Seeing lots of single-track MTB trails and no signs prohibiting camping, I decided this would be an ideal place to stay for the night. Ahhh, I so enjoy sleeping in the woods, with the birds chirping and mosquitoes biting.

Sunday morning I was back on the bike riding North-East to Warrington, then North-West through St. Helens along the bike-path that paralleled the M570. Continuing through Ormskirk I eventually arrived in Southport on the coast of the Irish Sea. Getting a cheap hotel room, I decided to take Monday off and just relax for a bit.

I wandered along the beach, through the town and into a few restaurants, including an excellent Italian placed called Volare; I even found a few decent cafes. Turns out the owners of Esquires Coffee House will soon be heading to the USofA for a month-long tour! Good luck guys!!

Though the food and sand were nice, without question, the best part of Southport is the active BMX scene. At the local BMX/skateboard/fruit-boot park, dudes were rippin’! Chatting with two of the best riders, John and Sam, it seems the scene is atleast 50-strong. It was great to see so many riders and skaters out enjoying themselves on a city-sponsored park right in the heart of this beach town. They were all very happy to take the TV Sucks/Ride Your Bike stickers I handed out and were a really friendly group of people. Yup, without question, cyclists–of all styles, except fixie hipsters–really do enjoy life to the fullest. Props!
