Apart from South Park and liberal marijuana laws, one of the things Colorado is most famous for is the skiing. Being a very occasional snow-boarder, I was rather hoping there’d be a chance to get out and play in the snow. As it turned out, Sunday was the last day of the season at Monarch Mountain. Typically the weather on the last day is warm, folks ski in short-sleeves and tail-gate party in the parking lot. This year was a little different. The night before the mountain received about 6-8″ of new snow. When we arrived it was cold and windy. Not exactly party weather–though the die-hards never die–but great conditions for skiing! In fact, there were several spots of fresh powder we enjoyed. Being my first time on a board in over two years and my first time riding in real powder, I fell into the deep stuff more than I carved it. It was much harder than I imagined, but certainly as fun!
Spending the day going up and down that snowy mountain, at one point we ducked under a rope and hiked up the mountain to access a trail that had been closed because the winds were too fierce for the chair-lift. Very cool, indeed. Reilly and I felt like super bad-ass back-country riders. Although compared to the VERY experienced back-country expert Kimberly, we were just a couple of newbies. No matter, we all had huge smiles on our faces as we carved fat lines in fresh, wind-piled snow. Yup, just another day in paradise.
