A Return to Dirt, a Return to Self

Today I did something I’d not done in just over two months. Today, I rode my mountain-bike. And you know what, it was glorious.

With a busy work schedule and a desire to focus my riding on getting ready for the upcoming Hairshirt road race (more on my thoughts about that in a posting to come), I’ve simply not made the time to get out on the mountain bike.

Yesterday afternoon I decided enough is enough, I need some dirt in my life. So, I got Isabelle all tuned up and ready to go. Adam agreed to join me and by 11:30 or so we were turning the pedals at the Ganaraska Forest Centre, about 90mins drive from my Toronto home.

Within moments I felt at ease, at home, at peace. Surrounded by lush green tall trees, the soft dirt under my tires, the smell of life in full bloom. They conspired to spawn a huge great smile upon my face. Swatting mosquitos, sitting in the dirt, sweating profusely in the humidity; I could not have been happier. It took a while to get my dirt legs under me but eventually I got into my groove.

Road riding is immensely rewarding, those smooth steady miles making me a better rider and in some way, a better person. On the mountain-bike, however, yeah, that is where I find myself. On the trail, flying like the dragonfly, that is where I melt into the moment, completely at peace with myself and all around me. Today, I returned to that place. Today, I returned to self.
