Rest and be Thankful

While sitting in Dave’s Glastonbury tattoo chair, he told me of a place in Scotland he had always wanted to visit; Rest and be Thankful. The name seemed enchanting, rewarding those travelers brave enough to scale this long steep grueling climb with a charming little spot to rest their weary legs.

It was with that idea in mind that last Thursday, David, Adam and I postulated over it’s likely grade; my guess was 15-17%. In actual fact, though it was a few miles long, it never went above 6%; a very manageable grade, particularly with the help of a slight tailwind. All the while I kept my pace down waiting for the climb to really begin, for a wall of road to suddenly appear, crushing my spirit as it sapped my legs of all their might. But that never happened. As I approached what I believed to be the summit, I looked at my map, then down the road; back at my map and back down the road. Pulling into the little parking lot, I quickly found the stone into which was inscribed:

Taking a few pictures, I continued on my way, if not a little disappointed.

As I coasted down the other side, it dawned on me. Contained in that phrase, rest and be thankful, were not words of repose for the weekend warrior challenging himself to great feats of physical exertion. It was not a message for those looking to be recognized for having surmounted some great obstacle. Rather, they were words of the pious, imploring the traveler to sit for a moment, to look about and to be thankful for the natural wonder that lay before him. The message was not one of triumph, but of humility. Take the time to enjoy life and be thankful for the life you have.

Rest and be thankful; words of wisdom.

  1. That’s a great story, and certainly words to live by. It also sounded like a climb I could handle to see said words!
