Poncha Pass
Wanting a lighter ride Monday, I again rode west out of Salida to Poncha Springs, where I turned left onto route #285 south. There on the right was a sign warning of a forest fire up ahead and a request not to call 911. Sighing at the prospect of fire, I pedalled on.
Soon enough, the grade went up while the gearing went down. The sun made me sweat, the view made me smile. Topping out at Poncha Pass, elevation 9,010′ [2746m], I was greeted with another warning sign, it’s subject torching the hills beyond.
With a gusty headwind and shorter hill, today’s descent was not quite the grand affair it was the day before. But fear not, I still managed to have a great time hurtling myself down that road.
