One trail closes, another door opens
The Monday following the Chihuahuan Desert Dirt Fest, the Desert Sports posse rode the “Epicito”; a 43 mile version of the Epic course, but starting/finishing 7miles into the State Park. It was a tremendous day of mountain-biking for us all. Everyone felt strong and the weather was ideal. We conquered climbs, descents and obstacles with the biggest of smiles. We stopped to watch each other’s triumphs and trials. We laughed and we lived.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all fun and games, there was work to be done. As we rode, we leap-frogged each-other removing the blue and pink ribbons that marked the course. Riding with my friends in the desert under glorious blue skies after a few days of cherished rain. Yup, it’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.
Wednesday’s ride was a final one, for two reasons. Not only was it to be my last ride in the Desert, but we rode a trail that was being closed. Regrettably, this has led to an absolute ban, including the mountain-bikers. Though she permitted us one last ride, it was tinted with melancholy.
While I am sad, too, by the fact of leaving this desert paradise, there is much reason to be excited about my return to Canada. I am excited for the return to work and the structure it brings to my day. I’m looking forward to sleeping in the same bed for more than just a few nights in a row. I am looking forward to the birth of my second nephew or niece. There are friends to reunite with and relationships to develop.
And, without question, there are many, many miles to be ridden…and written about.
