On The Road/Blog Again
I need to be honest both with myself and my readers, assuming there are some. Since returning to Canada–and to a summer of employment–I have been rather lax in my blog updates. This does not, however, reflect a decline in my riding. In fact, I’ve been riding quite a great deal, mostly on my Cervelo S2 road bike, Shirin. She and I are out on the road about 4-5times a week, training for the upcoming 320km Hairshirt in June. I’ve also let slide some of my readings and philosophic ramblings while I concentrate on work, training and math class. Yup, math class. I’m taking a college preparatory mathematics class in order to apply for college. Yes, really. I’ve decided–at age 38–to go back to school and study paramedics. More about this in a future post, I promise.
For today’s posting, I’d like to share a few pictures[and the ride data] from my ride this past Sunday, which included the 140km Brian Smith Charity Ride between Burlington and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and back. It’s a fundraising event for The Halton Trauma Centre which provides services to children and teens who have suffered the horror of child abuse.

About 200 cyclists of varying ages and abilities signed up to ride either the 52km, 80km or 140km event. The 8am start-time for the 140km event saw about 70 lycra-clad cyclists get pumped up for what would turn out to be a tremendous day of riding. With just one big climb near the beginning of the ride, we enjoyed mostly flat terrain and not too hot of temperatures. In fact, the weather was ideal.
Since I’m training for the Hairshirt, I needed to get in a few more miles on the day, so I actually rode a total of just over 210kms. Yup, I was pretty darn tired by the end of the ride and eventually found myself sitting on the edge of my bed, still in full cycling kit, just staring at the floor for about 5mins. I then proceeded to eat several hundred calories of food before a two hour nap and then more food. And more food.
Monday morning I went out for a two hour recovery ride and felt surprisingly good, which is very encouraging, particularly since I intend on riding about 250kms this coming Sunday. Yes, I’ll be sure to post about that ride and the sorry state I find myself in by ride’s end. In the meantime, I am pleased to be back blogging, writing, waxing philosophic and hopefully, inspiring folks to get out on their bikes and live life to the fullest.
