On The Road Again

Last week it snowed.  Tuesday it rained all night and most of Wednesday.  There have been several nights where the temperature flirted with freezing.  With all this crazy weather bringing much-needed precipitation to the Big-Bend area, the trails have been too wet to ride.  As such, I’ve swapped out the knobbies for some 32c slick tires.

Last Monday I rode to Panther Junction in the National Park, joined for the return trip by two friends.  Deserving of mucho calories, we descended upon the Starlight for 2-for-1 burger night.  On Thursday I rode to the Big Hill and back. Climbing was the name of the game.

Rising and falling, the road undulates, heaves, falls, twists and turns as it snakes its way towards the border town of Presidio.  Riding this route was blissful, painful and nostalgic.  Blissful being flanked by the Rio Grande to one side, mountains to the other The views out here are some of the finest around.  Painful because of the climbing; though there’s a long slog near the end it is the Big Hill at the turn-around that really hurts.  But, the kind of hurt us cycle-masochists yearn for.  About a mile of 15-17% climbing!  Nostalgic because I haven’t ridden this section of road since I finished my my 2010-11 US tour.  That day was one of the greatest I enjoyed in over four months of touring.

Riding this road again, I was swept back to that most magical day, reliving the moment I arrived in Big Bend, the moment I fell in love with this magical place and all her rugged, serene, majesty.
