Of Soup and Space

Seven days back in Terlingua; a desert paradise in the Big Bend area of south-west Texas; my special place.  In that time I’ve been out for five mountain bike rides, including the 95 km (59mile) Epic Loop  in the Big Bend Ranch State Park.  I’ve watched the full moon rise, the orange sun set and felt the warmth of the desert upon my body, warming my soul.  At night it gets down to just above freezing; during the day, mid-teens to mid-twenties (60’s to 80’s F).  While the desert offers near absolute silence, there’s been live music to enjoy at both the High Sierra and the Starlight. There have been meals with friends, dinner parties and trail-side snacks.  Last night when I got home, there was a container of soup waiting for me upon the trailer’s front step.  But, what is it about this space, this place?

Space; a limited or boundless three-dimensional extent, independent of what happens therein.  Place; a particular region, locality or set of surroundings.  More than that, place is where human action and interaction touches space and transforms it into something tangible, even if it remains indescribable.

Here in this vast, seemingly barren desert space is a most remarkable place, made so by the people who live here, who work here, who love, laugh and die here.  It is where people are united in their desire to get away, support each other’s quest for expressive solitude, and rally behind a community in isolation.

My family live in Ottawa and Toronto, Canada; in England and Australia.  I am blessed to have friends the world-over.  And while I love them all so dearly, it is here in this remote space that I have found this place where I feel at home.
