Of house and home
Since returning to the States from my month-long Peruvian bike-packing adventure I’ve been busy outfitting my recently purchased 2006 Sprinter van. This van will be my new home, a means to living the life I so enjoy; free to travel when I desire while keeping my bikes and personal affects close at hand. No more rent, no more rental cars or domestic flights.
For about two bitterly cold weeks, Reilly and I have been working away; insulation, fridge, auxiliary battery, lighting, water tank, sink and many other features to make my home as comfortable as possible. With most of the major tasks completed, just over a week ago I drove from Salida, CO to Terlingua, TX. Now that I’m here, I’ll continue the rest of the work; building storage compartments in “the garage”(space under the bed where I’ll store my bikes), shelves and cupboards. Other parts have arrived which need to be installed including a ceiling vent and solar panel. I’m also getting used to this new living space; what are the limitations, what do I want to be where, how much stuff must I get rid of (yesterday I purged myself of a large bag full of superfluous bike parts) etc etc. It’s a fun, though slow project which I’m enjoying very much.
With any luck, I’ll soon finalize the purchase of 10 acres of land here in the Terlingua Ghost Town that I’ve been eyeing for over a year. It’s ideally located near many of my friends while still affording me plenty of privacy. Though I doubt I’ll start building a house this year, I am already thinking about what to build and exactly where. Lots to think about for sure!
In the mean time and between bouts of construction, there is lots of incredible cycling to be had. Since I arrived in my little desert paradise, I’ve participated in The Stupid Race, enjoyed a hammer-fest on the road bike, reacquainted myself with the local trails and yesterday, played in the State Park with 13 other friendly mountain-bikers. Yup, life is pretty ok here in the desert.
