A couple of weeks ago, my life got turned upside down. In just over a week I went from mountain-biking every day in the Chihuahuan Desert to riding the trails in Austin, TX. I then got on a plane, flew to Portland, OR and spent two days getting tattooed in Vancouver, WA. From there I flew to Toronto, Ontario where I spent a day with friends. That same weekend, I drove to Burlington–twice–in order to meet my new land-lady, move furniture and a few possessions into the house that will be my home for the summer. With the Monday spent unpacking, Tuesday served as my first day back at work at Neworld Cycle. Wow, my head was spinning!

In fact, the culture shock of going from the Texan desert to the suburbs of Ontario really threw me for a loop.

“What am doing? Have I made a huge mistake? Where are the cacti?” These and other thoughts plagued me as I began to settle into a life of work, bills and traffic. Though I knew well why I was back in Ontario, I was having serious second thoughts.
My plan is to work for the summer, race Paul’s Dirty Enduro in September, then get back on Irene for more touring. I’ll also be returning to Texas for more epic mountain-biking with my friends! For the moment, however, there’s work to be done and lots of road riding to be had. But, before that could happen, I had to get my head in order. The cure? Mountain-biking of course!
On Sunday, Bevin, Isabelle and I went out for a short, low intensity ride on the trails at Puslinch Lake, near Cambridge, Ontario. We rode just 15kms over two hours but it was just what I needed. It was a beautiful day spent with a good friend; 15deg.cel. and sunny, blue skies. Though there was one section we probably should not have ridden, the trails were in good shape, just a bit wet with spots of snow and ice to keep things interesting.
Yup, a bit of mud and lots of fresh air put me right. It’s amazing how the simplest of activities can have such a profound affect on one’s sanity and peace of mind.
Back to work on Monday, I was off Tuesday and went out for a little road ride on my commuter, Dr Foghorn Leghorn. That little ride was equally as therapeutic; climbing a few very steep hills with too tall of gearing forced me to stand and attack those hills; panting, sweating, grunting and smiling the whole time!
Yup, life in the suburbs; mud and hills. It’s great to be back! Well, except for getting lost among the maze of tan houses with brown roofs.

  1. Bevin, are you still on that Norco? Your loyalty impresses me. Although your comment makes me wonder how many extra miles are on it since the last time we rode together? Hope all is well dudes.
