Northern Migration; No Matter Where, Just Is
Tuesday morning, 5:35am, I was on the road, driving from Salida to Golden, CO, located on the western outskirts of Denver. There my Sprinter van/home underwent some repairs while I explored, ate, read, ate, did some yoga and read a bit more. Did I mention I ate a few times? On the road by 4pm, I made my way north-east towards Interstate 80 and the Nebraska border where I stayed the night. For the next two days I drove and drove and drove. In Nebraska I had to fight the fierce winds to stay in my lane. In Iowa it just rained and rained. Crossing into Canada Thursday evening, I opted to stay the night in a southern-Ontario parking lot. Friday morning I resumed driving, though, it would only be for a few hours; my destination was Burlington and the home of my dear friends MaryAnne, Natalie and Bre. Everything was going along nicely until…
By the time I reached the Woodstock full-service rest-stop, I had stopped three times to put air in my passenger side rear tire. Every 45mins I was losing half my air pressure. At the rest-stop, I finally found the culprit; a screw was lodged deep in the tire. Pulling it free, the air really began to escape. I knew I had a spare tire but, I hadn’t realised I did not have a jack! Then I remembered that I had mountain-bike tubeless tire plugs. I jammed the hole with those glue-covered rubber strips, filled the tire with tire sealant, called the nearest tire shop and hoped for the best. Ten kilometers[six miles] later I was at Woodstock Tire getting the tire fixed properly; the mtb plug had worked!
Thirty minutes later my auto troubles were behind me. After visiting with friends in B-Town Friday evening and Saturday morning, I was back on the road Saturday early afternoon heading for Toronto. There, it was wonderful to visit with old friends, share some laughs and even a serious conversation or two. Sunday afternoon, the sun was shining–mostly–it was warm–sorta–and I was eager to go for a ride–definitely! Parking my vehicle at Sara’s and chatting with Sean, I was soon cruising the streets of Toronto and the pathways of the waterfront, heading east towards Scarborough. The clouds soon crept in and the temperatures dropped as the sun started to set. I explored a few new roads while enjoying routes I’d ridden countless times. After about 72kms[45miles] I was back at the van and making plans for dinner. A perfect afternoon in The City.
You know, the more time I spend in small towns and in the mountains, the less time I want to spend in cities or flat environments. But sometimes, if you are willing to simply enjoy where you are and what you’re doing, the location becomes irrelevant. I had such a wonderful time riding in Toronto Sunday, made even better by the company that joined me for dinner. Being open to the ride, to life and all the joy it brings, one really can find happiness anywhere….especially on the saddle.
