Getting absolutely soaked while setting-up camp Sunday night, I awoke to find myself in quite a nice–albeit now muddy–campsite; New Brighton State Beach, a couple of miles East of Santa Cruz. As has been the trend, the hiker/biker sites are oftentimes in the best locations offering excellent views. This was no exception.

Thinking I’d spend a second night here and spend the day relaxing and doing some of the many little odd jobs that needed tending to, I was soon advised by Melanie, the friendly Park Volunteer, that in an effort to keep the town’s homeless from taking up residence within the park, successive nights stays are not permitted. Pointing out that I could just as easily leave for the day then return once the whip-cracking Park boss had left for the day and self-register, we agreed that I’d move on, but at a snails pace.[check out was noon; I left closer to 2pm.]

Before departing, I had a conversation with [I forget his name; Jim, maybe?] who, the night before, had kindly offered me an extra tarp if it would help keep me and my gear dry. Under the pretext of asking if I’d like a can of V8–“I’ve gotta whole case of it”–, he came over and really wanted to make sure I had the name of the place correct and would be sure to stay there. Fortunately by this point, I’d actually circled it on my map with the words “great camping.” I told [Jim] this and it seemed to satisfy him. Nice guy that Jim.

Spending the day going up and down, around and around Hwy #1, I spent the night camped at the Man Resa State Beach. Included below are a few pictures from there.
