New Year's Day; hiking the Old Ore Terminal Trail

January 1st, 2013, I spent the day with a friend hiking along the Old Ore Terminal Trail in the Big Bend National Park. There, at the Terminal, the ore was transferred to waiting trucks that would drive it north to the train station in Marathon. Very little is known about the Old Ore Terminal and very little of it remains today.* The structures now lay in heaps upon the ground, like a rag-doll cast aside by an unhappy child. While even its mere existence was new to me, one of the coolest surprises we came across under those ruins where the skins shed by two snakes.

Taking a rather indirect route back to the trail-head via a canyon, we scrambled over boulders, collected lost pesos, avoided the most dense sections of cacti, marvelled at caves high up the canyon walls, revelling in the beauty of the desert all the while. After more than six hours plodding through the desert, we were home and ready for a two hour soak at the local hot springs. Truly a wonderful way to herald the arrival of the new year; may it set the tone for the days and months ahead.
