Leaving My Mark on Colorado

In early October 2011, accompanied by my brand-spanking-new Moots MootoX YBB, I flew to Colorado for ten days of “the best mountain-biking in the continental US.” Reilly showed me just what it is to ride a bike in heaven; between the aspens, surrounded by mountains; over the single-track and under blue skies. That trip made a huge impression on me, an indelible mark tattooed on my soul. In fact, it was there that I named my new bike; Isabelle, after the San Isabel National Forest. Since then, I’ve visited several times, even living in Salida for two summers. Yup, Colorado sure has left it’s mark on this Canadian boy.

Well, guess what. Now it’s my turn to leave my mark on Colorado.

A few months ago I received an e-mail that I actually thought was some sort of spam message. It was from Holly Andrew at the University of Oklahoma. She and her students were developing an educational panel for the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) describing the archeology of Hartman Rocks, located just outside Gunnison, Colorado. Searching online, they came across a picture I took of Hartman Rocks during that 2011 trip. Holly and her team were hopeful I would let them use my picture for that panel. Heck yes, you can use that picture!

Some modifications made to the original picture, the panel is now complete and will soon be installed at the Harman Rocks Trail-head. If you’ve ever been, you know just how amazing this place is to ride. If you haven’t, Hartman Rocks is an incredible network of fast, smooth, roller-coaster trails, shooting you through the wild sage and over the very technical rocky bits.

I feel hugely honoured to have been asked to contribute this picture to the BLM, to Colorado, to some of the trails I enjoy so much. Colorado has had such a huge impact on my life, I miss the mountains and my family of friends immensely. Living in Toronto, the mark left by those mountains remains indelibly on my heart and soul. Now, thanks to Holly and her team, I’ve left my mark on Colorado.
