Monarch Crest and Fooses Creek Trails aka: Mountain bliss

Last night around 9pm, the man, the legend, Keith Darner, aka CK, asked if I’d like to join him for a ride up to Monarch Pass, along the Monarch Crest Trail then down either Fooses Creek Trail or Greens Creek Trail.  Since I’d never ridden either of those options off The Crest, I jumped at the chance.  Well, more like fell…into bed for the 7am ride time.

We were finally on the bikes by 7:25 for the 3 hour’ish ride up to Monarch Pass.  Three hours and thirteen minutes later, I was drinking coffee at The Pass.  Ten minutes go by.  Fifteen, twenty, twenty-five.  Finally, after thirty minutes pacing the parking lot wondering what could have happened to the Dar Dar, he rolled up, looking a little pale.  I will spare you the details, but suffice it to say, Darner stopped twice to purge an upset stomach.  Thank goodness for s&%t tickets in the camel-back.

Back on the bikes, we rode one of my most favourite trails anywhere, the Monarch Crest Trail.  Narrow single-track, fast descents, grunting climbs and a view like no other…particularly once above the tree-line.  Passing a hiker, we looked at each-other, shook our heads and smiled; “damn that view, never get tired of it.”

Arriving at the Fooses Creek Trail sign, we stopped to admire the stunning mountain view that sprawled  before us, spectacular.  Dropping our seat-posts for the steep descent, we bombed downhill for the next 45mins riding over super-technical rock gardens, through myriad creek crossings, between the trees and around tight hero-dirt corners.  YES!  This is living, this is flow, this is the moment at high-speed where nothing matters but your line.
