Last Group Ride of the Season or, Mike drops the hammer..twice

All good things must come to an end.  Of course, so too do all bad things.  It’s called life, the perpetuity of change. But that’s a discussion best suited for your local watering hole. What I’m getting at here is that on Sunday I enjoyed my last mountain-bike group ride for the season in sunny West Texas.

Shortly after 9am, myself and six local bad-asses threw a leg over the saddle and hit the trails. Mike and Crystal rep’ed the tandem; Mike Ryan and his 11 year old racing phenom’ son, Caelan, made the trip in from the National Park while Dr Urbanczyk and Mark Yuhas made sure the group was stacked with grit and talent.  Yup, with a posse like this, you could be sure the ride would be one to remember.

Leaving Desert Sports we made our way up a certain jeep road; a tough, steep, dirt climb that would take us to a section of local trails. There, Mark and Mike Ryan conspired in true roadie form to shut me down.  Mark sped-off a few hundred yards from the base of the climb.  I thought it an odd strategy but was compelled to give chase. Back on Mark’s wheel and now at the start of that dirty climb, Mike came around my left side and dropped the hammer.  While he attacked, Mark blocked me from sprinting after Mike.  Eventually I reclaimed some real estate, but was never able to catch him.  As he summitted, Mike looked back at me and just smiled.  Kudos, boys, you got me real good, I deserved that.

Back together, we seven flew through handle-bar tall wild flowers as our shoes and pedals were covered in yellow pollen.  Never have I seen the desert bereft of rock and sand; instead, replaced by green, blue, pink, red, purple, yellow and white flowers.  Utterly breath-taking, bettered only by the intoxicating smell as we raced along Lajitas Trail #4 and into Fun Valley.

Arriving at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center to refill our water bottles (it would hit 90degF. under the sun) Caelan slowly rolled up a few minutes later.  He had crashed a couple of times and was sporting a bloody knee.  While no major injuries were sustained, those crashes certainly shook his confidence and he was done for the day.  It happens to us all; you crash a couple of times and then you just can’t get your head back into the game.  Better safe than sorry; smart decision Caelan.  Hope you are feeling better and are back on the bike.

With 17 [mostly] happy miles behind us, we had another 13 ahead of us in the State Park; Waterhole Trail, Dome Singletrack and Fresno Divide. By the time we finished the Dome Singletrack, it was getting really warm, the stops feeling a rather unpleasant.  Off the front, myself, Mark, Mike and Dr Urbanczyk raced on towards the West Contrabondo t/h as Mike and Crystal on the tandem were just a couple of minutes behind us.

Exiting the trail, I sat up and pedalled casually towards the last little climb that lead to Heather and our waiting shuttle vehicle.  With my heart-rate coming down and thoughts of a cold beverage in mind, it happened again.  Mike Ryan came around my left side and, standing on the pedals, he took off up that hill.  What the &%$* ? I gave chase–again–but was not able to reel him in–again.  That’s two for Mike on the day; none for yours truly.  I congratulated him for the effort, sneaky though it was, but promised I would get him next season.

A huge thanks to Heather for providing shuttle and to all my dear friends who came out for my final Desert Sports group ride of the season.  While I spend the summer in Toronto, Canada, you can be sure I will always keep these rides fondly in my heart.
