They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, that you don’t realize how much you love something till it’s gone. Yup, that about sums up my relationship with my Lefty suspension fork.

Lighter, stiffer, stronger; better handling in the corners, smoothest action on the small stuff, a real lock-out for the climbs. This is the Lefty. The only problem with the Lefty is that when it needs service it’s a huge pain in the ass. You can’t just go to your local bike shop and get parts. Only Cannondale dealers may contact Cannondale, get advice and order parts. Even if you do go to a Cannondale dealer, that does not mean the mechanic there has any idea how to service your fork. Invariably this means sending the fork to Pennsylvania for service. AKA: time, money and inconvenience, all of which I’ve had to deal with a few times.

This past summer, I made the acquaintance of some folks at Cannondale and more recently they helped me get my girl back on the trail. It took a little while, but today, I rode Isabelle with that Lefty fork overhauled and reinstalled. The magic was returned. I rode so much faster, so much smoother; more in control and with less punishment. Again, it blew my mind just how much better the Lefty is than any other fork. Period.

A big thank you to Neil and Kevin at Cannondale for hooking me up. They offered sound analysis to the trouble I was having, offered suggestions for service and provided parts/tools so I could overhaul the fork myself. Truly, I am so very thankful.

The absence reminded me just how much I enjoy riding that fork. My heart grew fonder as I ripped across some of my most favourite local trails with that fork leading the way. But honestly, it’s a situation I’d rather not have to reproduce too often.
