Hot, Humid and Freezie!

Last Sunday was my longest ride in preparation for June 24th’s 200mile(322km) Hairshirt; a fairly punishing, though still enjoyable, 257kms.  At Jeff’s counsel, I took off both Monday and Tuesday, focusing instead on eating and sleeping.  Regrettably, a fairly intense rain storm Wednesday evening cancelled the Wednesday night Need for Speed power work-out.  More food and sleep for me.  Thursday morning, it having been a full three days since my last ride, I went out for about 57kms.  A fairly brisk ride, I made sure to work hard on all the climbs–and here on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, there are plenty of hills to climb.  Heck, even the flats are faux plats!  It felt great to be back on the bike after several days.  Though, don’t get me wrong, those first few turns of the legs were a little slow.

The next morning, Friday, it was my intention to ride the 90km loop I’d been doing recently.  However, after Thursday’s work out, and the very strong winds blowing at 5:30am, I soon acknowledged that 90kms was either not going to happen or I would suffer greatly.  And, not the good suffering I enjoy, but pain that would not have contributed positively to my training.  So, instead, I rode the same 57kms I rode the day before, but this time, taking about 17mins longer.  I was happy with my decision and am confident it was the wise choice.  Saturday after work, Darren, Jeff and I went out for a leisurely 45kms.  It was a beautiful evening and we were all smiles, except for Darren’s flat.

Early to bed Saturday night, I was up early this morning so as to get in a few extra miles before the Club ride.  Today’s Club ride was a planned 140km–rather than the typical 110-120kms–so we left at 8am, an hour earlier than normal.  On the bike by 6:45am, the first 10kms were rather slow and laboured.  The next 10kms were smooth and I was feeling good.  At 7:25 I turned around to head towards the shop to meet the posse for 8am.  However, I’d forgotten that I actually had an extra 5kms to ride between home and the bike shop, so I had to amp up the pace to get there in time.  Arriving at at 8:01am, I had just enough time to empty the bladder, refill my bottles and say my hellos.  By 8:15am we were off.

It was quite a hot day, with the temperatures getting as high as the mid-thirties(mid 90’s for my American and English friends) and loads of humidity.  Fortunately, we all[well, nearly all] felt strong and rode well.  After about 70kms, we stopped in the town of Rockwood for a short break to refuel and take a few pictures.  Back on the bikes, we enjoyed the ever-so-slight winds which served only to fool us into thinking it was not as hot as it really was.  Back in Waterdown–just north of Burlington–the bulk of us regrouped before breaking into a few smaller groups; not all of us were heading back to the shop.  I rode off by myself, finishing the day with 187kms; the Club would have finished with about 150kms.

As I neared home, I had a moment of brilliance; jumbo freezie!!  I stopped by the local convenience store and purchased a plastic tube of frozen sugar-water.  It was glorious!  Finally arriving home, I sat on the step and enjoyed my freezie before the requisite shower and feeding.  A well earned treat for sure!
