Home Is Not a Place

For the past few weeks, I’ve been feeling a bit burnt-out.  I’ve been mountain-biking a lot the past six months and I feel like it’s catching up to me.  In fact, there have been rides recently that felt more like an  obligation than a joy.  Recognizing this, I stepped back a bit.  I spent time with friends, went for a hike and even helped paint a school-bus.  The little break has helped me to enjoy the bike when I do go out, as I did a couple times last week.

The reality of leaving my desert paradise has also been weighing on my mind.  Here in Big Bend, Texas, this is where I belong, this is where I am happiest.  More than the beauty of the land, better than the stunning mountain-biking are the special people in my life who also call this place home.  But home is not a place….it’s a feeling.  And though I find myself spending less time in Canada and desiring more time in the US and abroad, I am always at home with my friends and family, where-ever they reside, where-ever smiles and open arms greet me.

In a week’s time, I’ll board a plane and fly from Denver, CO to Buffalo, NY then jump a bus to Toronto, ON, Canada.  There, I’ll visit with friends, spend time with family, do my taxes and tend to the logistics of living the dream.  Plans for the next nine months are coming together, all of which excite me greatly.  Road riding in Prince Edward County, mountain-biking in Colorado, bike-packing around Bolivia then back to Texas for the winter.  Wow!

In all these remarkable places–and the many others between–are those who’s warm embrace tells me I am home.  Equally are those whom I’ll meet who’s friendly smile speaks to the knowledge that home really is more than just a place,  it’s a feeling.  And let me tell you, where I am right now, I feel pretty damn good.
