Hibernation

Shirin near the Lakeshore Lodge. Hi mum.

Early April in Prince Edward County, the hibernating giant awakes languidly after its five month slumber. Around the bike shop and all around The County everything is slowly waking, stretching ahead of the summer bustle.

With the weather still cool and the tourists still a month away, the bike shop is slowly easing into itself. Bikes being built, cobwebs being cleared, maps being updated. Everyone moves with the slow ease of one who has just got out of bed, wiping the sleep from its eyes, looking for coffee with little sense of urgency. Personally, I am beginning to learn where things are and how things work, getting used to my new surroundings and procedures. With the cool, raining, dark days, nobody moves all that quickly.

Last of the snow at Sandbanks Provincial Park.

It being more than a week since my last proper ride, I pulled the quiver from the van, reinstalled pedals, saddles and front wheels and set out for a leisurely 45kms around West Lake, the Lakeshore Lodge to say hi to mum, East Lake, Cherry Valley and back to the bike shop. What I like to call “Peter’s Loop.”

Everywhere I looked the feeling was the same. Farmland still brown and lifeless after the winter snow, the occasional bud just beginning to poke its head out. Farm houses, barns, silos and other out-buildings stretching their arms and yawning as tractors are pulled out and fences mended. Trees naked of their leaves expose bird nests absent of their feathered inhabitants.

Houses that were once homes being prepped for the AirBnB season just around the corner. Businesses figuring out menus, suppliers and staff ahead of the throngs of ravenous tourists looking for that perfect County experience.

Farms along Shannon Rd easing into springtime.

As I eased myself along the empty roads, smiling past the last remnants of snow and ice, I felt like I was tip-toeing around grandfather who was not quite awake but grunting and snorting enough to know he wasn’t quite asleep either.

As the County wakes and gets ready for the coming season, I too am getting myself ready for the insanity that is a summer at the Bloomfield Bike Shop. But for now, I pull my hoodie over my head, reach for another cup of coffee and ease into the day.
