After the previous day’s epic monster ride, the posse was looking for something a little less painful for Day 4. The fast, rolling single-track trails of Hartman Rocks just outside of Gunnison [7,700ft/2,347m] were just what the doctor ordered. For about three hours, the four of us–Reilly, Carlie, Chris and myself–flew along the smooth dusty trails nestled within the desert hills, rocks and seemingly endless expanses of wild sage. Don’t get me wrong, however, there were many very technical sections of rock that had to be deftly negotiated both up and down. As you can see from the pictures below, Reilly had a little trouble with one-such rocky obstacle. Fortunately, his rear-end only had a few dozen cactus needles that Carlie kindly helped remove.

With a quick dip in the Gunnison River to cool us off, we soon found food and coffee in the pleasant town of Gunnison. We even found a bike shop to explore. As we drove home and the sun set over the mountains, the Alpenglow effect made the sky seem as though it were raining rust. Colorado, truly spectacular. This really is a magical place, a little bit of paradise.
