Goodbye Canada, hello Happyland

On Monday, May 23rd, the tour resumed. Starting in my home town of Winchester where I’d stayed the weekend with dear old friends, John and Hazel, I made my way west-south-west to Plaitford, not too far from Romsey. A short 35-40kms, owing to the fact I didn’t get started until late in the day. With the sun bright and warm all weekend, it figures that I’d get caught in the rain as I pulled into a B & B for the night. Though the room was tiny, I slept well and enjoyed a typical English breakfast–less the meat–the next morning.

Tuesday morning, after chatting with a couple from Australia who were touring the English countryside[by car], I soon got started. Passing through Canada, I spent the day riding many of the 100 miles of bicycle trails that snake their way throughout the New Forest.

The New Forest is anything but new. In fact, it was originally set aside by William the Conqueror in 1079 as a hunting/wildlife refuge. It now comprises over 140,000 acres and is home to innumerable breeds of wild horses, cows and other wildlife. It is also one of the world’s few remaining ancient forests, an other of which I visited in Northern California; the forests of the giant Redwoods. With about 80kms in my legs, I called it a day at the Red Shoot Camping Ground, with it’s accompanying restaurant of the same name. Showered and fed, I spent a couple of hours at the restaurant, chatting with the bartender–neglected to ask his name–and one of the servers, Jo. It seems Jo, too, has the travel bug, having spent time in SE Asia, New Zealand and soon, eastern Europe.

Wednesday I made my way west then south to Ringwood where I mailed some postcards, ate a hearty English[though still veggie] breakfast and washed it down with two good coffees. From there I rode south along route B3347 to Christchurch, then west along the coastline to Poole[where the Boy Scouts started], where I spent a very unsatisfactory night’s stay at the Holiday Inn. The room left something to be desired and the meal I ate was awful. Hopefully my e-mail to the Holiday Inn guest services will see me compensated. Atleast breakfast was okay, despite the instant coffee out of a machine! Really; it seems the two options for coffee over here include espresso and instant. Oh well, so long as I get my daily dose of caffeine I survive…and ride.
