Bike-packing Peru: Fork Woes Resolved
Since we left Cusco nearly two weeks ago, I have been dealing with a suspension fork that continually lost air pressure and would blow a seal. Chatting online with Scot at Absolute Bikes, Reilly initially thought it was either of two o-rings. While Scot contacted RockShox for a warranty replacement piston assembly, we hunted through every hardware store and auto/moto-mechanic shop in Ollantaytambo and Urubamba for the required o-ring. Replacing them both, we made our way towards Machu Picchu.
Regrettably, the fork continued to lose pressure significantly and blow a seal. Arrggh! I was not happy, to say the least.
Back in Ollantaytambo Reilly wondered if it wasn’t a third o-ring we had not previously considered. Digging further into the fork on the hostel floor, we discovered a small piece of plastic debris under the o-ring, likely a result of inadequate quality control during production.
Removing the debris and rebuilding the fork with 5cc’s of 15-weight synthetic motor-oil to help lube the entire assembly, we crossed our fingers and prayed all was resolved.

Well, I am happy to report that after several hard days riding in remote Peru on some pretty burly, rocky dirt roads, that RockShox SID Solo-air fork is finally keeping pressure and hasn’t blown its seal!
The ironic part about all this is that I opted not to travel in Peru on the Cannondale Carbon Ultra Lefty fork I’d been using for the past few years for fear that if something went wrong, it would be all but impossible to service. So instead, I installed this new RockShox fork….one that has caused me so much anguish.
Oh well, I’m just happy to be back on the road, fully suspended and eager for many more miles to come.
