For Sale; The Love Affair is Over
My friend MaryAnne is fond of saying that people come in to our lives for a reason. While the duration may be a moment, a year or a life-time, there is significance and consequence to that relationship, even if it takes time and effort to recognize and accept that reason. Some times that person is a lover and we get upset when the love affair ends. We become resentful or angry; we question our self worth or worse. Just like you, I have experienced this sense of loss, when some one has left my life, be it through death, desire or circumstance. But if we are willing to take a few steps back from ourselves, we see with clarity that the relationship has run its course, that its purpose has been served. Once we come to this realization, we can walk away with our head high and our heart full; we can let that person go…with encouragement, love and our blessing. Sure, there may be an adjustment period to the new reality but really, life is a constant adjustment period, nothing remains the same.
Sophie is ma chère québécoise, my dear sweet french girl. Since she came into my life back in the fall of 2008, we have enjoyed many miles together, many days under the sun. It has been such a sweet love affair, one I thought would never end. But, as I described above, when the time comes for a lover to leave, we must let them go graciously, not clinging to some notion of perfection in the past. Such is the case with Sophie, my Steelwool Pure Laine 58cm road bike. The love affair is over, she is now for sale.
Last summer I spent about three hours with Shawn Gillis, owner of Absolute Bikes, as he properly fit me on Sophie and Isabelle(my Moots mtb). Measurements were taken, ailments and physical limitations were considered and my position was observed with the eye of a professional. By the time we were done, one thing was quite clear; Sophie was not for me. Her geometry was all wrong, I couldn’t really get far enough over the bottom-bracket to be both comfortable and efficient on the pedals. While I desperately wanted to keep her close, I just knew the love affair was over. I had to set her free. (Shirin, my Cervelo S2, fits perfectly)
Yup, Sophie is now for sale. She is looking for an owner who will love her dearly, treat her right, and ride her daily. One who will appreciate the little details of her beauty while taking advantage of her relaxed geometry and superb parts spec.
For the record, we’ve actually ridden less than 10,000 kms together, a mere trifle in the life of a hand-made steel road bike. But she loves to ride and is a dream to behold.
Steelwool is a small frame and parts company from my home-town of Ottawa, Ontario. Sophie was one of the last Steelwool frames to be hand-made outside of Montreal, QC by former Marinoni frame-builder, Luc. Her 58cms were built with Columbus tubes, came with a carbon-bladed/alloy-steerer fork and 27.2mm seatpost diameter. Below is a full parts list.
If you are interested in Sophie, she is being lovingly taken care of by the wonderful people at the Bloomfield Bicycle Co. in Bloomfield, Prince Edward County, ON, Canada. You can either contact me or, you can reach Kt or Rick at bbc
