Epic Personal Best
Some times, it all just comes together.
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting a bit nervous about my fitness for the upcoming Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, to held this coming February 12-14 at the Big Bend Ranch State Park and Lajitas Trails. As always there will be a very strong group of riders at the front of Saturday’s 58 mile Epic Loop. Charged with leading this burly ride, I know I have to bring my A game to the trail. However, for the past several months, my riding has been limited by the weather, being sick, extraterrestrials and a broken bicycle. In fact, I’d not yet even ridden the Epic. Sunday, that had to change.
Driving from the Ghost Town to the East Contrabondo Trail-head, I was filled with the peaceful knowledge that a glorious day of riding lay ahead of me. In my rear-view mirror the sun was just breaking over the Chisos Mountains. Ahead of me Lajitas Mesa was slowly being illuminated. I was grooving along to the tunes on the radio, smiling at the early morning tranquility. Wheels hot at 8am sharp, I was looking forward to my solo time-trial across the desert.
Typically when I do this ride I’m with a group of other cyclists. While I enjoy the camaraderie of riding with others, as well as the safety in numbers when out in the desert, I was looking forward to the freedom this solo adventure would offer. Unbeholden to anyone, I could stop when I needed, churn out a big gear when I wanted, play when the feeling took me. The climbs flattened below me, the descents flew by. Everything was going well, it really was my day.
Stopping just once for only 15 mins–and inadvertently leaving behind a half-eaten PB&J sandwich–it eventually dawned on me; barring any mishaps or mechanicals I should easily beat my personal best time of 7:15hrs. Though my legs were starting to ache, the wind was at my back as I raced down-canyon towards the trail-head.
At 1:35 pm, five hours and thirty-five minutes after I started out, my ride was complete. It felt amazing! I had crushed my previous best time and had such a wonderful time doing it. Everything came together perfectly; bike, body, trails, weather. It was just one of those days, one I’ll always remember.
