Durango Death Ride

With the Vapor Trail 125 just three short weeks away and following last weekend’s triumphant Leadville Trail 100 experience, a really big ride is in order for this weekend.  How a road ride?  But not just any road ride but how about one that’s over 220 miles long with over 23,000′ feet of climbing?  What if that ride had a name and that name had “Death” in it?  Ya, that’s the kinda ride I want do this weekend. Fortunately for me, there is a loop that meets all those criteria; the Durango Death Ride.

This evening, Reilly and I will drive the 2.5hours west to Ridgway where we’ll stay the night.  Tomorrow morning we get on our road bikes and ride south-west to Dolores, CO then south-east to Durango where we’ll likely spend the night at some cheap motel.  If we are feeling particularly saucy, however, we’ll continue riding north along route 550–the Million Dollar Highway–and stay in Silverton.  From there its just 30 miles–including Red Mountain Pass, the biggest climb on our trip–back to Ridgway.

It’s a huge ride but the training will be invaluable and the scenery, incomparable.  Some folks do it in one really long day.  We plan on doing it in two days. but who knows, maybe we’ll feel super strong and have favourable winds.  All I know is, I’m really looking forward this incredible road riding adventure.
