Driving to Colorado, Day 1

Friday morning I emptied my little trailer and packed my gear in a friend’s car for the drive to Salida, Colorado. [I’m driving it to CO for him so he’ll have it here when he arrives] Here I’ll stay ’till Saturday April 20th, when I fly from Denver, CO to Buffalo, NY, then take the Greyhound bus to downtown Toronto, Canada.

Each year I stay in this desert paradise it is so much harder to leave.  Not because the land holds me here but because the relationships with those I love get stronger and stronger.  This year was hardest still.  But, with commitments made and obligations to be fulfilled, I left my desert home for a Colorado paradise.
The drive from Terlingua, TX to Raton, NM took about twelve hours.  Driving through New Mexico was boring and tedious.  Generally the scenery wasn’t all that much to look at; natural gas drilling rigs spewing flames pollute the landscape, motivating folks to drive just a little bit faster.  Passing through Roswell, NM–famed for alien experimentation Area 51–it was just another medium-sized city but with aliens and alien references everywhere, even outside the local KFC restaurant.  As I got further north, however, closer to the mountains, the landscape came alive, full of majesty as the sun was setting.
Though my destination was still about three hours away, I decided to get a hotel room for the night in Raton, NM, just south of the Colorado border.  I was getting excited as I knew I would soon be back among friends, high in the mountains.
Heading towards Fort Davis, TX.
New Mexico natural gas field….so bleak and ugly.
Aliens are everywhere in Roswell, NM
Heading towards, Las Vegas, NM as the sun sets.
