A Day of Surprises
Birthday’s often brings surprises. Some of those surprises come gift-wrapped. Others, their delivery a bit more subtle. Saturday–my 42nd birthday–was a day filled with surprises of all sorts.
The day started with a wonderful treat, waiting for me in my e-mail in-box. My brother and sister-in-law recorded a video of them and their three young boys singing happy birthday. Once done, the eldest, Gavin, blew out the solitary candle on the green dinosaur cake he’d recently won at a school raffle. Being sung happy birthday by Ed, Ryanna, Gavin, Oscar and Heath; I couldn’t think of a better way to start the day.
Wanting to go mountain-biking with my friends that day, but being off the bike for 10 days with an injured shoulder, I went for a quick road ride Friday to make sure all was good. After 90mins on the black-top, all felt fine. So, Saturday morning, myself and eleven of my dearest mountain biking friends hit the trails.
Treating my friends to a bit of a surprise, I put together a route that included trails rarely used. With permission from land-owners and a bit of help from Mark Yuhas, the ride included trails that locals had not ridden for more than a decade. It was a blast!
As we returned to Desert Sports, I attempted a little trick I’ve been practising for years but had never accomplished. Rolling towards the shop’s bike-rack, the trick is to pull a big endo, whip the tail around 180deg, then roll fakie(backwards) right into one of the narrow wheel slots in the rack. I try this nearly every time I roll up to Desert Sports but have never made it. On my birthday ride and with multiple witnesses, however, I finally nailed that silly little trick. Surprise!
A few hours later, a cook-out was held at Desert Sports. The turn-out was surprising…and humbling. During the busiest week of the year down here(Spring Break) and with other parties happening, about thirty of the most wonderful people you could ever hope to meet came out to celebrate. Local friends and friends from out of town. People I see every day, people I’d not seen in a couple of years, even a couple I’d just met. I am still in awe at all who turned up. There was so much scrumptious food, a big ole fire, lots of cold Lone Star and even a few presents. I was surprised with cards, drawings, a very slick white button-up shirt and a string of blue & green lights for the van…which I wore on my cowboy hat.
Surprised to wake without a hangover–nor any additional injuries–Sunday continued where Saturday left off. More mountain biking with friends followed by a leisurely afternoon on the porch watching all the tourists flock to our little paradise.
A better birthday I could not imagine, filled with the love of family and friends, enjoyed atop a bicycle and next to a roaring fire. I even nailed that trick! A day full of surprises for which I am eternally grateful, my thanks to all who made it happen.
