Crankworx and Kin
I am not a down-hiller. I do not shred the gnar. I don’t race enduro nor do I send it on the dirt jumps. Rather, I am an endurance XC, gravel and road rider. Want to ride your bike(on the ground) for eight hours? I’m your man. Wanna launch over the train tracks in Britannia? I’ll catch the video on youtube.com, thanks. So, you might ask, what the hell was I doing this weekend at Crankworx, the biggest, most famous gravity event in the world? Just hangin’ with two of my favourite people was all!
The week before Rob and Martine’s trip to British Columbia(they live in Alymer, Quebec), Martine and I began making plans for things to do in Squamish. Visit 99 North, hit up all the breweries, hike the Chief. Then I got a message saying ” Rob has booked a hotel room for all of us Friday night, in Whistler.” Okay, cool. I’ve spent only a little bit of time there this summer, so it would be fun to check it out.
Picking me up in Squamish Friday early afternoon, driving towards Canada’s Aspen, Rob mentioned that there was some sort of mountain-bike event happening in Whistler. “Cranking something?” Holy crap, CRANKWORX is this weekend, I totally forgot! Not even bothering to try and contain my excitement, I endeavoured to convey to my non-cycling friends what was in store for us. Huge bikes with 8″ of travel and low seats, full-face helmets, tattoos and young kids who launch themselves off monstrous great jumps.
Having not seen Rob and Martine in nearly a year, it seemed serendipitous that we should reunite while such a spectacle was taking place. All over Whistler Village the energy, excitement and unabashed youthful glee expressed by all was palpable. Pro and amateurs, fans and riders, kids and old folks shared that particular feeling unique to spending time with one’s tribe or clan. In this case, a tribe of cycling enthusiasts 25,000 strong.
Dropping into that wild world with two of my oldest and dearest friends, that feeling was heightened still. I’ve known Rob since I was a teenager, Martine since they got together in our early twenties. Much has happened over those years, to each of us and to our friendship. Those shared experiences are what provide the comfort and ease we enjoy when together. More than friends, they are my people, my kin.

After a late night of Austrian hammer games at the hotel bar(which I won, thank you very much), we all slept in, found breakfast and extra coffee. Driving back to Squamish we made a few stops to take in the magnificent British Columbia coast; mountains, rivers, forests and waterfalls. Breathtaking.
As they drove away Saturday afternoon, heading to Vancouver for a few days, I thought what an incredible 24hrs it had been. Not for a moment was I sad to see them go, for I knew my kin were always there.
