Choose Your Battles; Bike-Packing Trip Cancelled

Sunday afternoon, as I sat eating lunch in the historical mining town of Golden, Colorado–now more of a Denver suburb–I checked the weather forecast.  As I wrote a few days ago, it was my intention to head out for a three-day bike-packing trip in the front range mountains west of Denver.  Lows in the low 30’sF and highs in the high 50’sF(0-14degC); rain, thunder-storms, fog and possibly snow were predicted…and that wasn’t even up high where I would be spending the bulk of my time.  In fact, while it was a sunny 70degF(21C) in Denver, it was foggy and 37deg(3degC) in the town of Winter Park where I had hoped to reach my first day of riding.  Ugly to say the least.

Now, if that weather forecast were for just three days of a longer trip, say a week to ten days, then I would have sucked it up and got on with it.  But when the entire trip is set to be cold, wet and miserable I had just one question; why bother?  While I enjoy suffering on the bike, that kind of suffering just ain’t what I call a good time.  So, I decided to abandon my trip before it even started and got a lift back to Salida where I am today and where the forecast is mostly sunny and 60degF(16C).  Much more civilized.

Oh yes; the route I had originally planned to take was altered significantly based on the advice of some very, very experienced long distance mountain-bikers, Eszter Horanyi and Scott Morris.  The amended route included several more mountain passes and a lot more trail than the original route.  A huge thanks to you both, particularly Eszter, for helping me plot a three-day route that I hope to tackle on another, sunnier warmer, occasion.

Leaving my van behind in Golden for repairs, as I waited for my ride back to Salida I strolled around a bit of this mining town.  Below are a few pics. Regrettably, I missed the Colorado Frame-builders BBQ the day before.  Curses.
