Bike-packing Basics

A friend and I are currently planning a four-day/three-night bicycle tour down here in south-west Texas. While our tour will be on-road, it presents an ideal opportunity to begin figuring out my bike-packing equipment.  I’m also thinking that a two-day/one-night trip alone will help me greatly to figure out some things before I join my friend for our four-day tour; perhaps even this Monday-Tuesday.  This means sorting out exactly what I will need and how/where I will attach it all to my mountain-bike.

While cycle-touring I used front and rear panniers bags plus a handle-bar bag.  On the mountain-bike, however, panniers really don’t work and the amount of gear being carried must be as minimal as possible.  Rather than panniers I’ll be using a full-size custom-made frame-bag from Oveja Negra Threadworks, a handle-bar bag for my sleeping roll made by the same company plus a large expanding seat-bag made by Revelate Designs.  I also have a small bag from Oveja Negra that fits on the top of the top-tube, just behind the stem.  While the eventual goal is to have all my gear on the bike, I will for now, also travel with my Osprey Packs hydration back-pack.  One of the reasons for this is water; since my frame will be filled with the frame-bag, the two water-bottle cages therein will be unusable.  I do have bosses to install one on the underside of Isabelle’s down-tube but here in the desert–even in the winter–that simply isn’t sufficient.

While I am sorting my gear, packing and re-packing all the bags on the bike, I am also researching bike-packing gear lists and tips offered by more seasoned bike-packers.  Below are a couple of the sources I’m using to get myself organised.  So while I start packing, check out these sites for an idea of what I’m trying to accomplish.
