Today, a milestone was achieved.  Not by myself but by my friend/house-mate MaryAnne.  She rode her first ever Century today!  Congratulations MaryAnne!

After an eighteen year hiatus from cycling, earlier this summer MaryAnne purchased  a new Jamis road bike.  Since then, she’s been riding regularly; alone, with friends, family and the Oakville Cycling Club.  At one point, she scoffed at the suggestion she might ever ride one hundred kilometres.  But, she set some goals and was determined to realise them, including an 85 km ride two weeks ago.

Today was the Ride for Refuge; a fund-raising ride occurring in locations across Canada in support of various charities who work tirelessly assisting the victims of human-trafficking.  With about 200 riders participating in Hamilton, ON, over $1.1 million was raised nation-wide this year.  Yes, you can still contribute to my ride by following this link.

On the bike at 9am, we rode the longest distance option for the event; forty-five kilometres in just under two hours.  After a fifteen minute break, we were back on the bikes for round two.  We did the loop again–plus an extra ten kilometres–rolling in at exactly 100 kms and in under 4.5 hours.  MaryAnne did it; one hundred kilometres her first season back on the bike.  Way to go MaryAnne!

Just goes to show; if you put your mind to something, set some goals and do the work necessary, anything is possible.  Any thing.
