Nick, with a smile on my face, I hate you.
I hate you.
It was a real treat meeting you and staying at your excellent Bed & Breakfast. Your recommendation for dinner in Lockinver was spot-on, as were your sightseeing suggestions for my time in Durness. And Patrycja’s Polish scrambled eggs really were fantastic.
As you know, even before arriving in Lochinver, I had planned not to take the longer coastal route to Unapool on account of the very ominous looking double-arrow climbs indicated on my map. But then we got to talking and you questioned my strength, stamina and courage as a cyclist; all but actually daring me to ride those 20% climbs. Being the cyclist that I am, I had no choice but to accept your challenge.
A few miles after Drumbeg and at the top of a fairly long steep climb, I stopped to take in the incredible view. With that hill barely reaching 15%, I actually said out lout “is that all you’ve got; is that the best you can do?!” In my mind I was drafting the email I would send you, calling out the other cyclists you mentioned as light-weight amateurs.
Ten minutes later I got what I deserved and what you promised; a narrow, twisting, 21% climb that did indeed force out a scream to urge me up and over that summit. The next 40miles [60 total] to Durness were tough. The strong wind was in my face all day, the temperature never went above 15deg. and the climbing seemed to never end. Then again, why should I have expected riding on the moon to be easy, even if it was stunning in its beauty.
At the end of the day, I was glad to have taken the coastal route, pleased I met your challenge but happiest most of all for having met you and Patrycja. If I do visit Scotland again, you can be sure that I’ll return to the Highlands and look forward to staying with you both. Nick, with a smile on my face, I hate you.
Sincerely,
Alex Bowling
Great to meet you and glad you really enjoyed “the Drumbeg through Nedd challenge”. Safe ride – enjoy, and respect for doing what you want to do. Nick and Patrycja.
