Lajitas Can’t Defeat Us
The banners are up and the t-shirts have arrived[most of them anyhow]. There’s a steady caravan of vehicles laden with bicycles streaming into the Big Bend. The camp-site is filling with tents, trailers and all sorts of RV’s. Cyclists, dogs, kids, sponsors and myriad others have descended upon the Lajitas Golf Club and Spa for the President’s Day weekend. And of course, the Desert Sports crew has begun to pull their hair out while singing the same refrain as last year, “Lajitas can’t defeat us.”
Yup, the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, 2013 edition, has arrived! While riders pump tires, lube chains, discuss post-ride tasty beverages and ogle the latest piece of two-wheeled gorgeousness, those behind the scenes are busy trying to pretend it’s all going swimmingly. Nope, nothing ever goes as planned at a bicycle event, whether it be one of the grand tours or a simple local event. Then again, plans are just that; plans, hopes, the best of intentions.
Curiously, life has a way of sticking it’s nose where it doesn’t belong and messing up the best made plans. The only thing to do is put on your helmet, throw a leg over the saddle, smile and show some adaptability.
Let’s ride!!
